Facebook has unveiled details of its plans to launch a new cryptocurrency called Libra next year.

Users will be able to pay for this currency through its own apps and through WhatsApp.

Facebook said Uber and Visa were likely to accept the new cryptocurrency in the future. But there is concern about how to protect users' personality and money, as well as because of the potential for currency volatility.

Facebook said Libra would be independently managed and backed by real assets, and using it would be easy to send a text message.

This is the latest project to introduce a digital payment service by a technology giant, after Google Bay, Apple Bay and Samsung Bay, although these services are not based on digital currency.
